Well… It’s been a while

Hello everyone. Do you remember me? I’m that watercolour artist that used to post here occasionally! Seriously I must apologise for my long absence due to illness, COVID restrictions, and a new hobby getting in the way of any painting. I’m hopefully sorted on the health front, so here’s my first offering. It’s called ‘Roughtor – Bodmin Moor’ a place close to my home that is as beautiful as it is desolate. I hope you like it. I promise I will be back with more soon. Till then…

Don’t Look Now…

Hi everybody

Well, I’ve been working on this picture on and off for about a month. It’s in acrylic and I’ve titled it ‘Don’t Look Now…’ because it reminded me of the film starring Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie. In the film, set in Venice, he’s haunted by a figure in red that stirs memories of his recently deceased Daughter who owned and wore a red duffel coat. He pursues this figure through the back streets of Venice. Not a good idea! I won’t say any more in case you’ve not seen the film. It’s based on a short story by Daphne Du Maurier.

I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year as I probably won’t get another blog out before then.

Happy painting.

Watercolour Added… Showery Tor

Hi everybody

This is Showery Tor a watercolour on Two Rivers NOT (Cold Pressed) paper. 300lb. 1/2 imperial. Two Rivers is an absolutely beautiful paper with a random texture, which is perfect for this type of subject. It’s hand made at a mill in Somerset which is a totally hydro powered water mill.

On a very windy day a couple of weeks ago I hiked up to Showery Tor, which is about 1.5 miles from my house. It is typical moorland scenery there. It can be bleak, but also very beautiful. The Tor in the background is Roughtor, which is the second highest point in Cornwall. I took loads of photos for reference and this is the painting resulting from it. I’ve made a full video series of the painting for my YouTube channel PeteBathoArt which is now live and can be viewed from the links on my Video Tutorials page.

Rock – Panoramic in Watercolour

Hi everybody

I’ve used a slightly different format for my latest painting. This a scene of Rock, which faces Padstow across the Camel estuary. It is painted as a panoramic view. I split the full sheet of paper the opposite way to what I normally do. This gives me the letterbox format which suits a wide angle view such as this. For those of you who are interested I filmed the painting process for my YouTube channel

Padstow Harbour

Hi everybody.

This is ‘Padstow Harbour’ a watercolour on my favourite Arches paper. As most of my current work is residing in the Tintagel exhibition at the moment, I needed to paint a relevent scene for the up-and-coming exhibition at Padstow. As both exhibitions overlap by one day I can’t use the exhibits from Tintagel for Padstow. I may well do another Padstow scene before the exhibition starts on 31st August. We’ll see…

As One door Closes…

Hi everybody

Well, the Gwynngala exhibition finished yesterday 14th June, but the Camel Art Society starts today (15th June) in the memorial hall, Padstow. This exhibition runs until 28th June and is open 10 till 6 every day with free entry. I have three paintings on display, so if you will be in Padstow between 15th June and 28th June then it’s well worth a visit. I will be stewarding the morning session on the 28th. Hope to see you there.

Twit Twoo Little Owls…

Hi everybody

The first watercolour for June is ‘Hide and Seek’, a combination of two refernce photo’s that I thought would make an amusing study. This was painted on my favourite Arches paper.

I have a 3 day workshop with one of my favourite artists, Steve Hall, next week. I just hope that the weather is kind this year, although the forcast isn’t brilliant. I have done workshops on this particular week in June for the last two years and have not had decent weather on either one. Last year was mostly dry, but it was cold and windy and the year before is best forgotten about! I’ll be publishing my efforts here (always supposing I manage to paint anything at all). In the meantime a belated happy weekend.

New Opportunities…

Hi everybody

It’s been a great week for broadening my horizons on the exhibition front. My membership of the Camel Art Society has been upgraded to full member, which means I’m now able to exhibit at Padstow and Tintagel exhibitions. I’ve been on the waiting list for just over two years as an associate.

Also, I’ve been invited to join the Gwynngala Art Group that is based in Launceston. Gwynngala is a group of local professional and semi-professional artists. They hold various exhibitions throughout the year in locations like Padstow and Rock and also in Launceston. You can view their website at http://www.artofgwynngala.co.uk and they are also on Facebook

I will update the exhibition details closer to the time. In the meantime I’d better get painting!

Lovely Weather… For Ducks!

Hi everybody

After successfully selling an oil painting at the exhibition last year of a rainy scene with lots of reflections, I thought it was high time that I painted another. This time it’s in watercolour. Painted on my favourite Arches paper, it’s a rainy evening scene, I have a few more photo’s with a similar theme that I’ll be painting soon, possibly in acrylic.
