Raging Storm At Botallack

Hi everybody

Today I returned to a favourite subject. I’ve painted this abandoned mine three times now, and each time I find another way to portray it. The heritage of Cornwall is summed up in these iconic reminders of Cornwalls past and I’m fascinated by them. This is called ‘Raging Storm At Botallack’ and I painted it with my usual watercolour in a portrait composition to try and emphasise the scale of the cliffs and the isolation of the mine (Crowns Mine by the way). Hope you enjoy looking at it. I’ll be listing this for sale on my ‘Paintings For Sale’ page, along with a few other new additions.

Happy painting

Epitaph For A Fallen Giant..

Hi everybody

This is ‘Epitaph For A Fallen Giant’ a watercolour on Arches Rough paper. 140lb. 1/4 imperial. When I moved to Cornwall 22 years ago this tree became a special landmark for me. Standing majestic alongside the A395, it bore the brunt of what the westcountry weather could throw at it. Then one fateful day Storm Erik arrived. It took a Viking to fell it. I was really sad when I missed it dominating the skyline. That’s when I decided to remember it by painting it. Fortunately I took a photo of the tree about 10 years ago. I’ve replaced the road with a river… more fitting I think.

Time For Another Watercolour…

Hi everybody.

I thought it was about time that I painted again. As I said in my last blog, I don’t seem to have had much time to paint lately, and it is so easy to let things slide, so I finished this off today. It’s a painting of a Boathouse and boats somewhere in the Lake District, although I’m not sure where exactly, as I didn’t take the photo. The photographer is Sandie Bell and the Lake District is her favourite haunt. She takes such inspiring photos. I’ve called it ‘A Quiet Day At The Boathouse’ and it’s painted on Fabriano Artistico paper. Hope you like it.

I have a workshop tomorrow with Colin Pethick, who is a superb artist and tutor. We’ll be painting a moonlit harbour scene in oils, so watch this space.

In the meantime, here’s the watercolour.

Watercolour added… Grassington

Hi everybody

Apologies once again for the lack of contact. It has been an eventful year so far, to say the least. My Mother-In-Law had a very bad fall the day after New Year and we’ve been back and forth to the Hospital ever since. I’ve also been recovering from a bad cold during the last week and haven’t felt like doing anything. My YouTube channel is also lacking updates. I haven’t published anything new on there since November last year. I have managed to paint this scene of Grassington though. It’s painted on a new (to me) paper which is Fabriano Artistico. It behaves a lot like Arches paper, but is considerably cheaper. Perhaps not quite as robust, but I shall be using it again as I had 5 sheets for Christmas as a present. Once againg I’m Indebted to Sandie Bell, who takes such wonderful photos. Hopefully it won’t be so long until the next blog.

I’m back…. With Another Watercolour

Hi everybody.

Happy New Year (belated). I’ve been very quiet since November. I don’t seem to have had the opportunity to paint much. I’ve managed to rectify this with a watercolour of Golitha Falls that I did at art club this week. I used the same reference photo that I used for my Christmas card, but this is seasonally closer to the photo. Painted on my favourite Arches paper, Hopefully I’ll get more opportunity to paint now.

Watercolour and Video added…

Night Time in St. Ives

Hi everyone

Watercolour on Arches NOT paper. 140lb. 1/4 imperial. Steven Cronin set a challenge on his Patreon site with this photo. Taken by Steven, it’s a night time scene at St Ives Cornwall. I used a very limited palette of neutral tint, light red and rose madder, with white gouache to bring out the highlights. I’ve videoed this and it is now available to watch on my YouTube channel.

Added ‘Winter Trees’ – After Ted Wesson

Good morning everyone.

I forgot to add this painting I did recently for a video. This is ‘Winter Trees’ a watercolour on Bockingford NOT paper. 200lb. 1/2 imperial. Ted Wesson is one of my favourite artists. I love his loose style and limited palette. It was a joy to paint and the video is available on my YouTube channel Just click here if you’re interested. It lasts about an hour, but you can skip through it if you wish.

Watercolour added… Golitha Falls in Winter

Hi everybody.

Well, it’s getting towards that time of year. The sun has been blazing today so I thought I’d paint this years Christmas card! I need a bit of lead time to get the cards printed. So here it is. ‘Golitha Falls in Winter’ a watercolour on Arches rough paper. 140lb. 1/2 imperial. I thought I’d use a rough paper for the texture you can achieve with dry brush work. I also changed the season from the reference photo. The photo was an Autumn scene, but obviously, snow fits better with Christmas (at least in England), but saying that I can’t remember the last white Christmas (discounting Bing and Danny Kaye of course). I wanted the strong light source to silhouette the central trees.  As I said, the reference source came from the internet as an autumn scene, but I changed the season to match a winter scene. I’ve tried to make the centre trees contre-jour (against the light) with a strong sunrise. I have made a video of the painting process for this and I’ve posted it on my YouTube channel at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiXIpSf8Fuo
